HISTORY OF SIRC
SOUTHERN INDIA REGIONAL COUNCIL OF
THE INSTITUTE OF CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS OF INDIA
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India formed by an Act of Parliament came into existence on 1st July 1949. In April 1952, five Regional Councils were established with Headquarters at New Delhi and Regional Councils at Mumbai, Chennai , Kolkatta, Kanpur and New Delhi.
The Southern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (SIRC of ICAI) came into existence on 1st April 1952. Shri R.N. Rajam Iyer was the FIRST Chairman of the Regional Council.
Initially the Regional Council functioned at No. 334, Thambu Chetty Street, Chennai - 600 001. In 1962 it moved into its own premises at Nungambakkam. In 1964, the new building was constructed, which housed SIRC office as well as Income-tax Department and the Company Law Board. On decentralisation of the functions of the Head Quarters Office, the Decentralised Office Sections and SIRC were functioning since 1974.

The Southern India Regional Council has the second highest number of branches next to Central Region --
33 branches. It has the second largest number of members next to Western Region with around 31200 members on rolls as on date ( 1st January 2007 )
